| Where and when were you born? I was born in Guelph, Ontario, Canada on May 27th, 1981 What is your profession? Still trying to find myself… I am a certified Personal Trainer although am not currently working in that field. I have an Honours Psychology Degree from the University of Guelph and have spent the past few months working in a Psychology Practice. My passion is Bodybuilding and I hope to someday find my way into what I am supposed to do! Were you involved in sports or fitness prior to bodybuilding/figure and how did you get started with weight training? Growing up I was never really involved in any extra curricular activities. When I was younger, around 15, I developed a quite serious eating disorder (Anorexia) and due to poor self esteem and body image, I did all I could to lose weight. When I was 17 and still very much anorexic I decided to join a gym – my ultimate goal was to lose more and more weight by doing excessively large amounts of cardio. Being that I am considerably outgoing, I became friends with a woman who worked there. We started talking and I disclosed my dissatisfaction with my body and told her what my goals were. She showed me a picture of Cory Everson and asked me if I thought her physique was appealing- and I did very much! She told me that in order to achieve that physique, I needed to start eating properly, start lifting weights, and focus more on health and nutrition. From that point on, I dedicated myself to the sport of bodybuilding. My mind set changed completely and I was determined to better myself and my body through research, healthy eating and lifting weights. I bought FLEX magazines and read them cover to cover- I followed the diets in the magazines and copied the workouts which I would then research online to find out how to properly execute each movement. From that point on, I trained consistently- and didn’t miss a workout! Since then I kept researching and learning different strategies for gaining muscle and losing body fat, and in the winter of 2005 I hired my trainer, Gary Aguto, because I wanted to compete on stage! I started the dieting process, and with his help, support and guidance have been able to transform my body into something incredibly beautiful! Was it a goal for you to compete in figure competitions right from the beginning or was it something that grew in your mind as time went on and you saw the progress in your body? Competing was something I had (secretly) always wanted to do but never thought that I could- I didn’t think that I had the shape for it. I knew that I had the drive and dedication to train and diet, but I didn’t know that competing was something that I would be capable of. When I met my trainer and he told me that I had a great physique for competing, I told him that I wanted his help and wanted to step on stage! Can you give me your competition history? 2005: Mississauga South Central Championships, 9th 2005: Sudbury Championships, 4th 2006: Mississauga South Central Championships- withdrew due to allergic reaction to a diuretic (I passed out on stage- not the best time of my life…) Please tell me something about your training routine (ie: how many days per week / training split /cardio, etc.) OFFSEASON I really LOVE the off-season- it gives me an opportunity to train really hard and heavy, which is what I’m all about! I stick mainly with compound movements and keep my reps very low (4-6). I lift 4 days a week and will do 30min of cardio post workout, plus every Sat morning. I don’t mind doing cardio, and it helps keep me kind of lean so it’s worth it. Champions are made in the off-season- Bodybuilding is a 24/7/365 lifestyle and its important for me to take advantage of every single opportunity I get in and out of the gym to become a better bodybuilder! PRE CONTEST The time before my show I will train 4-5 days per week and my cardio will increase dramatically. Right from the beginning I will do 2 sessions per day, beginning at 35 min each session. As I get closer the times will increase, up to 50min twice a day! My workouts become more focused on squeezing and detailing the muscle, and so my rep ranges will change as well. I like the months before a show because it’s nice to see your body change right in front of your eyes as I get leaner and leaner! What is your favorite exercise in the gym and which one you don’t like so much? Wow that’s a tough question… I LOVE training and don’t know if I have an absolute favourite! I would have to say shoulder press is right up there, as are partial dead lifts, t-bar row (basically ANY back movement), leg press, stiff legged dead lifts, incline db chest press… I know it’s a lot, but I LOVE working out and it’s so hard to pick a single exercise. I’m not a big fan of leg day- I love that I can push a lot of weight, BUT I find that training legs is just so exhausting! I never skip it, but I don’t look forward to it like I do my other workouts Which body part is your best in your opinion? Another tough question… since I’m always striving to be better its hard to say what I think would be my best… when they’re pumped, my shoulders cap nicely and I am always striving to develop bigger shoulders! If you don’t mind would you give me some stats (best lifts and some body measurements)? Best Lifts: Partial Dead Lifts- 270lbs total Leg Press- 450lbs total Pull Downs- 140lbs Incline DB Chest Press- 60lbs DB Shoulder Press- 50lbs BB Head Cavers- 65lbs DB Bicep Curls- 30lbs What do you enjoy about training for competition....what do you enjoy about the 'off season'? I like the same thing about both: the challenge. Each is challenging in their own way. The off season is used to build muscle and really tap into your inner strengths when lifting in the gym. You have to not only have a strong body, but a strong mind- pushing heavy weights is more of a mind game than anything. I really enjoy the challenge that I face every day I’m in the gym to train. Pre- contest time offers the same challenges, but in different forms. Dieting down for a show, doing double cardio and eating next to nothing is probably the HARDEST thing I will ever do in my life. It’s hard physically as well as mentally- there was one time that I was so mentally and emotionally exhausted before my show that I broke down while I was on the treadmill and just started crying because its SO hard being a bodybuilder- and yet this is something we put on ourselves! From the outside looking in it doesn’t seem that hard, but competing required determination and dedication that 98% of the population just doesn’t have… I consider myself lucky and resilient to be able to experience such a beautiful (but hard) thing! Please describe a typical day in the life of Sarah Fitt. Wake up, make coffee and jump on my bike (pre-contest) to complete my morning cardio. After showering, eating my first meal and getting ready, I head to work. I am an Assistant to a Psychologist and am pretty much in charge of running the entire Practice (nothing gets done without going through me first!). At 5pm I get off work and head straight to the gym, where I will train for 40min and then come home and do another session of cardio. I will have another meal, pack my bag and meals for the following day and head over to my boyfriends house for the night. Everyday is pretty much the same, meals are the same, training is the same- and really- what else matters??!! Please tell me about what you do when you don’t work out (hobbies, what do you do to relax?, etc.) In all honesty, if I am stressed or need to relax, I will go to the gym and have a really good workout! I find that to be very stress relieving. I also LOVE reading books; I really enjoy cooking and baking, and will watch TV once in a while. What are your competition goals or personal future goals? The only goal that I have is to keep getting better, both inside and out, based on my OWN standards. I don’t have any goals when it comes to competing- I will continue to diet and train and be a bodybuilder and enter shows, but I don’t have any aspirations to turn PRO- if the path that has been set out for me leads me that way, I will happily travel in that direction. I want to inspire others to better themselves and live a healthier, more productive life. I want others to know that their personal goals (whether in fitness or other) ARE achievable with a little hard work and determination, and to NEVER give up! If you have a goal or a dream, always strive to achieve it! And remember- THE ONLY WAY TO PREDICT YOUR FUTURE IS TO CREATE IT! Please note: Sarah does not do sessions or wrestling of any kind. Please don't ask!! |
